Independent reading festival starts March 2
in Prince George’s County
To celebrate Read Across America Day 2016, a literacy festival
will be held at Charles Herbert Flowers High School on March 2 for Pre-K students who attend the Little Jaguars Preschool Lab. Read Across America Day celebrates reading and
is a national observance of Dr. Seuss' birthday. Seuss was known for writing
books for children such as "The Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs
and Ham."
Reading activities, games, educational exploration, food and
fun will encourage young children to read books at home. Students will be given
free books to remind them to ask their parents or guardians to read with or to them. In the afternoon,
festivities will continue by visiting children who attend a child enrichment center
in Landover, Md. The center will hold activities to celebrate Read Across
America Day. Kid Time Enterprises will provide additional books to add to the
center’s library and/or offer to provide free books for school-age youth and
toddlers to take home.
Discover Books – a book collection and online reselling
company donated the majority of the books that will be used for literacy events
that will kick off a campaign to distribute up to 1,000 of them to Maryland
youth. The festival and reading campaign
will be presented by Tyler Stallings, who is a 4-year-old aspiring author and entrepreneur.
Tyler inspires his mother, Andrea Blackstone, to develop community outreach activities
that will be provided by their forthcoming learning and publishing company called
Kid Time Enterprises.
As a part of the campaign, individuals will be encouraged to
recycle books, by finding out how to give them new homes through Discover Books,
when books are no longer needed by their original owners. Additionally, Kid Time Enterprises will invite
youth to read printed books more often, while balancing time spent online or using
electronic devices. Although the campaign is intended to encourage all youth to
read, specific efforts will be made to reach underserved children in and around
Prince George’s County.
